From Screening to Diagnosis & Management
Sleep Disorder Screening & Consultation
-
In 2008, Dr Elaine Ng introduced a comprehensive screening program for sleep breathing disorders that helps identify and accurately identify patients at risk.
-
It entails a detailed examination of your head, neck, jaws, teeth and airways, along with standardised subjective questionnaires and an in-depth medical and sleep history.
-
Using pulse oximetry technology, a non-invasive, single-night or multi-night sleep test can be conducted in the comfort of your own home.
-
Dr Elaine Ng is a sleep-trained clinician who can interpret sleep study reports and guide patients toward further treatment.
Assessment
-
The patient will be provided with the results of the screening test and clinical findings after a comprehensive assessment has been completed. Referrals will be made to specialists within the multidisciplinary team of sleep practitioners - this may involve ENT specialists (otolaryngologists), orthodontists, oral surgeons, respiratory specialists, and neurologists.
-
In cases involving swallowing, feeding, and speech, allied health professionals may be involved as well.
-
As OSA is a disorder that affects multiple organ systems, patients often receive more than one referral in order to fully manage the condition.
Treatment
The respiratory physician or ENT specialist will prescribe the recommended treatment to the patient which may include the following:
-
Oral Appliance Therapy
-
Orthodontic and Orthognathic management
-
Continuous Positive Air Pressure Therapy
-
Soft tissue Surgery
-
Hypoglossal nerve stimulation (HGNS)
-
Treatment adjuncts such as positional therapy, weight loss, dietary counseling, avoidance of alcohol and sedative medications, and myofunctional therapy may be advised.
